Government losing RM4 bln to RM5 bln in taxes from illegal cigarettes – BAT

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 : Multinational tobacco company, British American Tobacco (Malaysia) Bhd (BAT), estimates that the government is losing between RM4 billion to RM5 billion in tax revenue annually from illegal cigarettes.


Managing Director Erik Stoel said the estimation was based on the volume of illegal cigarettes which is more than four-fold over that of BAT’s annual output.


“BAT’s volume is about 200 million packs annually and we paid RM1.7 billion in taxes.The illegal cigarettes sold amount to 625 million packs annually,” he told reporters after the company’s annual general meeting here today.
