Queen awed by Taman Sinar Harapan residents

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 : The talents and capabilities of residents at Taman Sinar Harapan Ziyad Zolkefli, impressed Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, when she visited the home in conjunction with the official birthday celebration of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong last Monday. 


Her Majesty who was specially delighted by the residents’ skills in whipping up an array of decorative cupcakes, spent nearly three hours at the rehabilitation institute which houses 70 individuals with learning disabilities.


While at the home, Tunku Azizah took time to get to know the residents aged 16 to 25, commending them as she examined the results of their handiwork.


“Oh that’s beautiful, you certainly are talented.”


“In my next visit, I will teach you how to bake queen cakes,” Tunku Azizah was heard telling one of the teenage residents.


Tunku Azizah well-known for her cooking skills, briefly shared with the students and staff a recipe for Queen cakes.


“They are easy to make and taste delicious even without any icing, You can use my name to sell them,” she said light-heartedly.


On seeing a teenager sewing an apron, Tunku Azizah came up to her, tried the apron and praised the girl on her needlework skills.


While at the institute Her Majesty also joined the residents as they worked on producing different types of handicrafts, folding envelopes and decorating cakes.


She later presented RM30,000 as contribution to the institute.


During the visit Tunku Azizah was accompanied by her daughter Tengku Puteri Afzan Aminah Hafizatullah Al-Sultan Abdullah.


Also present was Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Hannah Yeoh.


Meanwhile, Taman Sinar Harapan Ziyad Zolkefli principal Siti Hajar Jelani, said the words of encouragement from the Raja Permaisuri Agong had spurred the residents to improve on their skills and inspired staff to make a difference in the students’ lives.
